Giving Tuesday is one of the biggest days of the year for the employees of everydayhero! Hannah Kernahan, one of the dedicated customer support team members at everydayhero, decided to get involved this year by eating cheeseburgers for Alzheimer’s Disease. We sat down with her to talk about giving, her favorite causes and what she likes about working at everydayhero.
What cause did you choose to fundraise for for #GivingTuesday?
I am fundraising for Alzheimer’s Australia.
What made you decide to get involved with that organization?
We spend most of our lives striving to create great memories to reflect back on when times are tough. Alzheimer’s and dementia can rob us of this simple pleasure to the point where we don’t recognize our nearest and dearest anymore. This is a tragedy and a waste. I’m fighting for a cure and the right to keep our memories close.
What did you decide to do to fundraise? What inspired you to pick that as a way to raise money?
My friends and family know me as someone who is a big kid at heart and also as one of those people who can eat constantly and never gain weight. So, I decided to supplement my fundraising with the promise that, if I reach my goal of $500 for Alzheimer’s Australia, I would film myself attempting to eat 10 McDonald’s cheeseburgers in 10 minutes! It’s ridiculous and would probably get very messy but it’s working!
Did anything surprise you during your fundraising?
When you mention to people that you are fundraising for a charity that you care about, I’m always surprised at how quickly hands fly into pockets and come back with what ever change is in there! It doesn’t matter what size or form a contribution comes in—everything counts.
Are you involved with any other charities?
I raised money for Cancer Council Queensland earlier in the year as part of Dry July. I’ve also been involved with Guide Dogs Queensland over the past few years.
What do you do at everydayhero?
For the last 12 months I have been part of the Customer Support team at Everyday Hero.
What is your favorite thing about working at everydayhero?
The part I love the most is the environment. When you work for a company that is striving to give charitable organizations a bigger voice, you find yourself part of a very down-to-earth, kind-hearted group of people. It makes me truly enjoy going to work every day!
Do you have any tips or tricks to share from your fundraising experience?
Keep nagging! If someone promises to donate, follow up. Also, as much as it’s wonderful to give selflessly to a worthy cause, it’s nice to receive something in return whether it be baked goods, a handmade card or a video of someone attempting to eat way too many cheeseburgers. That just makes it a fun experience for everyone. Go for it, you have nothing to lose!
