When you work for a company like everydayhero, it’s not hard to get involved in giving! Ben Hough, a Digital Campaign Consultant for everydayhero in Australia, decided last year that he wanted to participate in #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. He quickly chose Redkite as his charity, but it took a bit longer to determine how exactly he wanted to fundraise. He wanted to do something unique! He found his spark of inspiration in a daily habit: drinking coffee. Spurred on to success by his coworkers at everydayhero, he ended up going without coffee for over 40 days! We sat down with him to talk about his experience.
1. Was this the first time you participated in #GivingTuesday?
Yes, this was both the first time I participated in #GivingTuesday and the first time I had heard of it.
2. What is Redkite? What drove you to support them?
Redkite is a local charity in Brisbane which provides support to children, teenagers and young adults living with cancer. My support for this organization was driven by a peer who had experienced their support firsthand.
3. What made you think to give up coffee? What was your coffee consumption like before giving it up?
I thought long and hard about what to give up when I first heard about #GivingTuesday, but I arrived at the idea of coffee because drinking it was basically a habit for me. It was something I enjoyed having every morning. My normal consumption wasn’t massive—really only one a day—but I consistently had one cup daily.
4. When you started, how long were you anticipating that your coffee fast would go for?
My coffee fast was completely dependent on how much people gave. I thought it wouldn’t last more than a month, but that was quickly exceeded! I ended up reaching 44 days total.
5. What is your favorite thing about working at everydayhero?
The people and the passion. I absolutely love who I work with along with the collective passion everyone shares to make a difference through our technology.
6. Do you have any tips or tricks to share from your fundraising experience?
The biggest fundraising tip I would have is to keep at it! Keep pushing your story out there and the support will come.
7. Any other fun facts, stories or experiences that you’d like to share?
#GivingTuesday was a great experience and one which peers throughout the office really got behind. I will definitely be getting involved in again later this year!
