#BehindtheScenes: Taking the Long Road

Last year, everydayhero’s home office decided to get involved in #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. Digital Marketing Services Assistant Oliver Connell was on board right away. With a charity in mind, he decided that he would run to and from work, collecting donations from friends and family for every kilometer he ran. Soon, though, he had to start thinking a bit more creatively about running routes—his supporters ended up donating over $700 to his everydayhero page, and that meant he had 110km (or about 70 miles) to run! We sat down with him to talk about his cause and how it felt running 110km with his supporters cheering him on.

1. Was this the first time you participated in #GivingTuesday?

This was my first time participating but will definitely not be my last! It was great fun!

2. What cause did you support and what drove you to support them?

For #GivingTuesday, I supported Huntington’s New South Wales which provides support to people and their families affected by Huntington’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder. My uncle suffered from the disease and the ongoing support and care they provided was amazing.

3. Have you always been a runner? What have your biggest accomplishments been in running?

The hardest part about running for me is finding the motivation as I’m not the best runner. Accepting the #GivingTuesday challenge and having so much support for my charity was a great way to excited. I never thought I would get anywhere close to running the distance I did—110km! In the end, I got a great mix of donations from those those supporting my cause and those wanting to see how far they could make me run.

4. What is your favorite thing about working at everydayhero?

I get to work with some incredibly passionate people. It amazing seeing all of the creative fundraisers they do for their causes.

5. Do you have any tips or tricks to share from your fundraising experience?

The best tip I have is to make sure it’s fun and something that your friends and family can all get involved in. Their constant support and knowing they were checking my updates on my page was great motivation to keep working towards my goal.

6. Any other fun facts, stories or experiences that you’d like to share?

The hardest thing at the moment is deciding on a challenge for #GivingTuesday 2014. We have organized teams around the office this year and are looking forward to the competition it will bring!
